090: How to Start Building Self Trust… Fast

“I can’t trust myself with carbs.” Sound familiar? In this episode we are talking about the self-inflicted labels we put on ourselves and how to fix it. We’re breaking down the mental traps that destroy self trust and revealing the key to finally feeling calm and confident with food.

Let’s face it: trusting yourself around food can sometimes feel like trusting a toddler with finger paint. Risky. Messy. Potentially destructive.

Maybe you’ve said it — “I can’t trust myself around cookies.” Or leftovers. Or pizza. Or the “family size” bag of chips you allegedly bought for “movie night.”

Well, my friend, it’s time we address this little trust issue head-on — and no, this isn’t some vague “just believe in yourself” fluff. We’re diving into real, doable, funny-but-true stuff that helps you build self-trust — fast.

But First, Why Does Self-Trust Even Matter?

Because if you don’t trust yourself, you’re basically hosting a 24/7 mental WWE match between your inner angel and devil.

The angel: “Be good. No cupcakes.”
The devil: “But they’re gourmet. And you love joy. And it’s Tuesday.”
Your brain: shuts down from decision fatigue and eats 4 cupcakes in confused silence

That inner battle is exhausting. And here’s the wild part — when you have self-trust, that battle? GONE.
You finally get to make food decisions without a mental courtroom showdown every 5 minutes.

So How Do We Build That Magical Self-Trust?

✅ Step 1: Pick One Small Thing to Do for Yourself Today

Nope, not five. Not twelve. Not “become a new person by 4pm.”
Just. One. Thing.

It can be tiny, like:

  • Walking for 10 minutes
  • Drinking a full water bottle (bonus points if it doesn’t have a straw that attacks you mid-sip)
  • Asking yourself, “Am I actually hungry?” before reaching for snacks
  • Taking 3 deep breaths before deciding to inhale a tray of cookies

When you do the thing you say you’re gonna do — no matter how small — you’re sending your brain a message: “Hey, I’ve got your back.”
Repeat that daily and BOOM: self-trust is being built like a brick house.

🚫 Stop Living on the Ladder of Doom

You know the one — where every rung is 27 feet apart, and you’re expected to meal prep, do a juice cleanse, run a marathon, and solve world peace all before breakfast.

Instead, hop on the ladder where the steps are close together. The one where you can actually reach the first rung and build momentum without hyperventilating.

Small, doable steps = sustainable change. And way fewer meltdowns.

🧠 Your Thoughts Matter (A Lot)

If you constantly say “I can’t trust myself around food,” don’t be surprised when you end up bingeing on everything in sight. Your brain’s just trying to match the script you gave it.

Instead, start giving yourself proof that you can trust yourself — with small wins, one habit at a time. That’s the plot twist your brain didn’t see coming.

😳 Stop Judging Yourself So Harshly, Judge Judy

Let’s be honest. If your best friend told you she ate some ice cream even though she wasn’t hungry, you wouldn’t scream “HOW DARE YOU, YOU SHAMELESS MONSTER.”

So why do you do that to yourself?

The biggest emotional triggers for bingeing? Guilt, shame, and judgment. So if you want to stop the cycle, you’ve got to turn judgment into curiosity.

Instead of:
“Ugh, I’m such a failure. Why can’t I just be normal?”

Try:
“Hmm, interesting. I wasn’t hungry, but I still ate. I wonder what I was really needing in that moment?”

Boom. Now you’re Sherlock Holmes instead of a mean girl in your own head.

Conclusion: The Self-Trust Game Plan

  • Pick ONE small thing to do today (yes, even breathing counts)
  • Stop expecting yourself to leap up Mount Everest in one step
  • Talk to yourself like you’re your own hype girl, not your worst critic
  • Get curious, not judgy

You’re either building or breaking your self-trust with every decision — so let’s start building, brick by hilarious brick.

Now go do your one small thing, and celebrate it like you just won Olympic gold in emotional growth. 🥇💪
