049: How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Unlocking Food Freedom: The Comparison Conundrum

Have you ever caught yourself glued to a social media post—and even in real life—just noticing all the things you don’t have? The perfect body, the stylish and sassy bags, the flashy cars, or even the tiniest details you never thought you’d care about? And now that summer is here, the comparison game is stronger than ever!

In this episode, we’re talking about how comparing ourselves to others is living rent-free in our minds and how we can overcome it to be the best and most authentic version of ourselves!

The Comparison Trap: A Rant from the Other Side

Let’s be real for a second: comparing yourself to others is like trying to navigate a buffet of self-doubt—unappetizing and downright messy. For years, I’ve grappled with this beast, from my awkward high school days to now. And it’s not just about food or weight; oh no! It’s about everything. Clothes, cars, vacations, and yes, those flawless abs that seem to mock us from every Instagram feed.

I mean, remember high school? If you wanted to compare yourself to someone, you had to see them in the flesh—like, “Oh look, Sally just got a new car!” But now, all it takes is a quick scroll and bam! You’ve just compared your entire existence to someone’s sunny beach vacation. Thanks, social media!

Social Media: The Comparison Machine

If you’ve ever watched The Social Dilemma (and if you haven’t, stop reading this and go watch it!), you know social media is like a double-edged sword. On one hand, you can connect with friends; on the other, it’s a vortex of “What’s wrong with me?” moments. We’re bombarded with perfectly curated lives that make us question our self-worth. Why is it that we’re seeing someone lounging in Bali while we’re stuck at our desks? Talk about a reality check!

So, how do we combat this constant flood of comparisons? I suggest a digital detox—at least from the people who make you feel less than fabulous. Scrolling through your feed? If anyone makes you feel like a potato in a world of supermodels, it’s time to unfollow or mute! Yes, I said it. Out of sight, out of mind, my friends!

The “But They’re So Pretty!” Syndrome

Let’s take a moment to talk about those who really get under our skin. You know, the ones who seem to have it all together, like JoJo Fletcher (yes, the former Bachelorette) strutting her stuff while we’re over here wondering if we even remembered to wear matching socks.

Here’s a fun little anecdote: One of my best friends was obsessing over JoJo. I told her to hit that unfollow button. Two weeks later, I asked how she felt about JoJo. Her response? “Who’s JoJo?” Talk about a mic-drop moment! Out of sight really does mean out of mind.

Shift the Focus: It’s Not Them, It’s You

Now, let’s pivot a bit. When you find yourself comparing, it’s time to turn that lens inward. Ask yourself: “Why am I feeling this way?” Is it really about JoJo, or is it a reflection of your own feelings of inadequacy? Trust me, your brain is just trying to affirm those negative beliefs you have about yourself.

So instead of fixating on others, let’s appreciate what we have. Take a moment to acknowledge your body—yes, even that muffin top. It’s kept you alive, helped you hug your loved ones, and allowed you to dance like no one’s watching (even if they are).

The Action Plan: Make Comparisons Work for You

Instead of letting comparisons bring you down, let’s make them a catalyst for change! Feeling less than fabulous? What can you do today to improve your mood or self-image? Maybe it’s a quick workout, a nutritious meal, or even just a self-love mantra.

And remember: it’s not about being perfect; it’s about making small, conscious changes that uplift you.

Conclusion: Your Journey to Food Freedom

So, my lovely listeners, as you navigate through this summer of less clothing and more comparisons, keep these tips in your back pocket. Social media? Unfollow the comparison culprits. Real-life comparisons? Reflect on why you feel that way and shift the focus back to you.
