057: From Food Obsession to Over 20 Pounds Down: Megan’s Story!

Today, Megan is joining us and sharing her story. She went from turning to food to cope at a very young age to where she is now: no longer binging, thinking about food, and over 20 pounds down!

Meet Megan: The Cheerleader We All Need!

Alright, let’s give a round of applause (or at least a little jazz hands) for Megan! Not only is she a member of our incredible Food Freedom Society, but she’s also the ultimate hype woman for everyone in our community. Seriously, if you need someone to cheer you on while you reach for that second slice of pizza (no judgment here), Megan’s your girl!

So, Megan, tell us—what was life like before joining the Food Freedom Society? How did you navigate the treacherous waters of food relationships?

A Food Journey to Freedom (with a Side of Ice Cream)

Megan dives in, sharing her journey from a young age, and boy, it’s a rollercoaster! “I struggled with food since I was a young girl,” she reveals. Let’s be real; a lot of us have been there. Picture little Megan using food as a way to silence her feelings—talk about emotional eating!

She bravely shares, “Food was something I looked forward to using to kind of shove down whatever I was feeling.” Can we get a collective “awww” here? Early on, she faced challenges, including her parents’ divorce and navigating the feelings that come with it. With all these emotions swirling, food became her go-to confidant, whispering sweet nothings like, “Hey, it’s okay! You can have a second helping of mashed potatoes!”

Megan recalls her middle school days, not feeling large but always a bit on the “fluffy” side. A little like a marshmallow- soft, sweet, and all too easy to get caught up in the sticky mess of feelings.

The Support Squad

But what’s truly inspiring is Megan’s transition from food being her emotional support buddy to finding true food freedom. Through the Food Freedom Society, she not only embraced her own journey but also became a beacon of hope for others. Like a superhero in a world of broccoli and kale, she supports fellow members, cheering them on as they conquer their food battles.

So if you ever doubted that you could be part of something bigger than yourself, let Megan’s journey remind you that change is possible! Whether it’s through delicious recipes, supportive friends, or just the occasional motivational speech (complete with pom-poms), we can all find our path to food freedom.

Food Freedom: Breaking the Cycle of Bingeing and Guilt

Ah, the good ol’ days of childhood, when our biggest worry was whether we could sneak in an extra cookie before dinner. But for some, those carefree days come with a side of complicated feelings around food. This week, we dive deep into the relatable journey of discovering how to fuel our bodies without resorting to pizza rolls and bagel bites—because, let’s be honest, those were the real MVPs of our middle school snack time.

Our guest kicked things off by admitting, “I didn’t know how to eat right, to fuel my body.” Oh, the irony! Who needs healthy fuel when you can binge-watch your favorite shows and munch on snacks that would make any health coach gasp? But as we know, burying emotions in chips and dip is just a temporary fix—sort of like using duct tape on a leaky pipe. Sure, it works… until it doesn’t.

This listener opened up about her childhood, where food became a comforting friend in a world that often felt overwhelming. “When the day went south, I knew I could count on food to lift me back up—at least for a little while.” It’s like the classic case of “I’m sad, let’s eat,” which we’ve all experienced at one point or another. And who hasn’t had a conversation with their favorite snack? “You’re my only friend, peanut butter cup!”

The Turning Point

Fast forward to middle school, where the binge-eating saga escalated. Imagine coming home, kicking off your shoes, and diving headfirst into a bag of chips while binge-watching whatever garbage your DVR recorded. Yep, that was the routine! But eventually, the thrill of the snack started to fade, and what was once a comforting routine became a binding cycle of shame and regret.

Our guest reflected on a pivotal moment: “I had been on every diet imaginable, from Weight Watchers to Whole30, and you know the story—50 pounds lost, only to find 60 pounds lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce.” That’s right, the classic “I lost it and then some” tale. Diets can feel like those annoying high school exes who just can’t take a hint. They keep coming back, trying to woo you with promises of a better tomorrow while you end up feeling worse than ever.

But then, something magical happened! While stuck in a car, emotionally munching on chips, she stumbled upon a reel from the Food Freedom Society. Suddenly, the veil was lifted: “It’s not about willpower; it’s about addressing unmet needs!” Cue the angels singing! It was like finding the secret cheat code to life—“So you’re telling me that my midnight snacking might actually be a cry for help?”

The Brave Step Forward

Taking that leap into the unknown is scary. Imagine signing up for a program and not telling anyone about it—talk about a secret mission! Our brave hero decided that if she didn’t take control of her health journey, someone would inevitably say the wrong thing and throw her off course. “I hit the subscribe button, kept it hush-hush, and dove into the program—no going back!”

And boy, did it get emotional! Picture this: our guest, sitting at her vanity with AirPods in, journaling her heart out while her husband walks in, likely wondering if he should call a therapist or bring her ice cream. But after she opened up, he turned out to be her biggest cheerleader! It’s like she went from hiding snacks in the pantry to flaunting her progress in front of the family. Talk about a glow-up!

The Power of Community

Through this journey, our guest discovered a support network that transformed her experience. As she shared her story, she found solace in a community filled with women who understood her struggles. She even found an accountability buddy—think of it as a weight loss sidekick! It’s amazing how simply talking about your challenges can help lift that heavy burden of shame and isolation.

And as her support network grew, so did her confidence. She started recognizing the harmful thoughts that had been plaguing her for years. “It’s like I was finally able to catch myself in the act of being terrible to myself and say, ‘Hey! Stop that right now!’” Who knew that self-awareness could be such a game-changer?

A New Perspective

Fast forward to today, our guest is rocking it—down 23 pounds and feeling lighter in every sense of the word. And the best part? She wasn’t even trying to lose weight! She was just learning to treat herself with kindness, and the weight loss was a delightful bonus. It’s like finding a $20 bill in an old coat pocket—you’re not looking for it, but hey, it’s a nice surprise!

Her relationships have also blossomed. “I can interact with my family without the cloud of self-hate hanging over me.” Now, instead of reaching for the cookie jar, she’s focusing on being present for her kids. And when they enjoy their treats, she doesn’t feel the need to make them feel guilty about it. “I can have it whenever I want,” she tells them. “And today, I don’t want it!” Talk about a parenting win!

The Gift of Food Freedom

The journey to food freedom is not just about the food—it’s about understanding our emotions and building a supportive community. Our guest’s story is a beautiful reminder that we don’t have to navigate this alone. So, the next time you find yourself eyeing that bag of chips, ask yourself: am I really hungry, or am I just trying to distract myself from something else? Let’s break that cycle together, one snack at a time!

And remember, whether you’re reaching for a carrot or a cookie, it’s all about balance. After all, life is too short not to enjoy a little treat now and then. Just don’t forget the joy of sharing it with someone who gets it!
