037: Overcoming Cravings + Stress Eating with Brooke Miller

We are talking about the challenges that every mother faces (us included) when it comes to food and self-care – something that is so common but not talked about enough!

We are dropping expert insights and practical advice to help you overcome the challenges of motherhood while prioritizing your physical and mental health.

The Great Kelly & Brooke Friendship Origin Story

So how did this mom’s dream team meet? Once upon a time, in a land of swollen feet and belly kicks, Kelly and Brooke discovered they were both crazy pregnant—like 38-weeks-waddling-through-life pregnant—with their second kiddos. And the plot twist? They didn’t even know the gender! Yes, this suspense-loving duo was keeping it old-school, bringing a little extra thrill to the experience. In between the pre-labor woes, they quickly realized they had everything in common, from oh, you did that in college, too? moments to a shared passion for sports.

And no, not just any sports. We’re talking serious football fans here. Brooke and Kelly chat, tease, and go head-to-head over NFL matchups like it’s a part-time job. They’ve even got big plans to jet off to New York one day and watch the Jets play the Packers, complete with a bucket of nachos and foam fingers.

Meet Your Double-Dose Coaches

Kelly Lyons, your Food Freedom Society ringmaster and a no-binge zone champ, knows a thing or two about conquering the overeating beast. She’s on a mission to help women ditch the dieting rollercoaster and reclaim that ‘I got this feeling around food. Through her Food Freedom Society, she digs deep, helping women break free from food-related worries by rewiring those sneaky habits that keep us stuck.

Brooke Miller brings her A-game as a dietitian and lactation counselor, specifically for new and not-so-new moms. She’s all about helping mamas find that groove again after the chaos of childbirth—whether that means getting your energy back, feeling fabulous, or boosting your milk supply. No calorie counting, no food shame, just feeling good, period. Brooke’s passion for postpartum wellness fuels her podcast and program, The Postpartum Shift, where she gives moms the tools to thrive.

What Are We Here to Talk About?

Alright, so Kelly and Brooke aren’t just two football-lovin ladies with a knack for baby-raising and eating well. Today, they’re diving into the realities of mom life: the overwhelm, the struggles with food, and the all-too-relatable experience of sneaking snacks on the go. They know that food freedom is about more than just food—it’s about finding a balance that makes sense for YOU. And, in classic Kelly and Brooke style, they’re here to do it with laughs, realness, and absolutely zero judgment.

So, We’re Basically Doing the Same Thing Here – And It’s Awesome!

Here’s the thing: we’re both in the business of helping people find their healthiest, happiest, most balanced selves. No calorie-counting stress, no strict diets—just genuine freedom around food. And for anyone who’s ever thought “I can’t be trusted around [insert favorite food here],” there’s a good chance that diet culture and restrictive eating are the true culprits. After all, telling yourself not to have something usually makes you want it way more!

Why Restriction Backfires

There’s a mountain of research on why restrictive eating is counterproductive. First off, it messes with your metabolism, hormones, and even your mood. And mentally? When you label foods as “bad,” they become way more tempting. It’s like telling a kid they can’t touch the shiny red button—they’re absolutely going to press it.

I mean, take it from me—college me. I’d survive the week on diet shakes and salads, then completely lose it come the weekend, swapping out discipline for tacos and beer at 4 a.m. every Saturday. I was so “good” during the week that I felt like I “deserved” to go all out on weekends. And yeah, that wasn’t exactly sustainable.

The Mental Side is Half the Battle

Honestly, food restriction isn’t just about what we do to our bodies—it’s also a massive mental game. Have you ever found yourself white-knuckling it all day, only to crash into a snack drawer by bedtime? That mental stress can lead to emotional overload, and then suddenly you’re knee-deep in ice cream or cookies. It’s like every time you say, “I have to be good,” you set up this ticking food-binge time bomb. Real freedom? It starts with changing our minds about food and learning to think of it as just food.

Mom Life: The Ultimate Challenge

Can we talk about how crazy life gets for moms? Between kids, family, work, and just trying to hold it all together, where’s the room for ourselves? That’s why so many moms end up finding comfort at the bottom of a Ben & Jerry’s pint. It’s the only quiet moment of the day—and food becomes a part of that. But as you guessed, that only works for about five minutes before the guilt sets in.

Here’s a pro tip: Ask yourself, “How will this decision make me feel five minutes from now? How about in an hour?” Practicing this self-check can help you understand if eating is actually the right choice—or just a reflex to escape the day’s stress.

Finding Freedom

The truth is, life after food guilt feels incredible. You get to focus on things that actually matter, like your family, passions, or even just being present. Food no longer controls your life; it enhances it.

If you’re thinking, “That sounds great, but where do I even start?” just remember this: it’s a process. Start small, celebrate progress, and give yourself grace. You’re not alone—plenty of us have been there, and the journey out is so worth it. 💪
