Do you have an awful body image, or hate what you see in the mirror? I get it. I was that way for years, and in this episode, I’m going to help you get out of your crappy body image funk.
We are talking all about why your body image isn’t even real, and important perspective shifts and quick things you can do today to improve how you feel about yourself.
Why Body Image Matters (Spoiler: It’s Not Just About the Mirror)
Okay, let’s get real. Body image affects our relationship with food more than that questionable late-night snack you might regret in the morning. If we don’t like what we see in the mirror, we might reach for foods that don’t serve us. It’s like trying to fill a bathtub with the drain open—no matter how much you pour in, it’ll never feel full!
So today, I’m serving up three quick tips to improve your body image in BIG ways. Ready? Let’s do this!
Tip #1: Forget the Scale—It’s a Drama Queen!
First up: Stop weighing yourself! Seriously, this isn’t a high school dance competition where you’re judged by a number. Weighing yourself just adds fuel to the fire of body image drama. If the number is good, you might celebrate with a dessert (yay!). But if it’s bad? Cue the “Eff it, I’m going to eat everything” spiral!
Instead, challenge yourself to hide the scale—let your friend, partner, or that one family member who loves to meddle do the honors. And while you’re at it, swap the scale for some affirmations. Try saying, “I deserve to treat my body well” or “I may not love how I look today, but that’s okay.” It’s about time we flipped the script, right?
Tip #2: Embrace Neutrality—Toxic Positivity, Be Gone!
Next, let’s talk about practicing neutrality. No one looks fabulous 24/7—unless you’re a cartoon character or a filter-loving influencer. Instead of forcing yourself into a state of constant positivity (which, let’s be honest, is about as realistic as finding a unicorn), aim for neutrality.
And when you find yourself sinking into self-criticism, say, “Thank you, body, for keeping me alive during that Netflix binge!” Recognizing all the little things your body does—like, you know, breathing—can shift your perspective. Trust me, you’ll find you have more to appreciate than just your gym-toned calves!
Tip #3: Snap Away and Let It Be!
Alright, all you perfectionists out there, this one’s for you. When it comes to taking photos, remember: a picture is just a moment in time. If you catch yourself obsessing over that one angle that makes your arm look a little, shall we say, “squishy,” you need a reality check.
Think about how many times you’ve heard someone say, “This sunset picture doesn’t do it justice.” If we can’t expect a camera to capture our beauty perfectly, why on earth would we do that to ourselves? Newsflash: Nobody is scrutinizing your photos as much as you are—everyone’s too busy worrying about their own.
So here’s your challenge: get in the picture, take it, and don’t look at it right away. Yes, I know it feels uncomfortable, but let’s reclaim our power over the body image BS that dictates our worth based on a snapshot. Even the latest iPhone can’t capture the full essence of you!
Wrapping It Up
So, my fabulous friends, remember that body image is a perception, not a fact. It shifts based on a myriad of factors—mood, food, clothing choices, even that full moon you forgot about!
Let’s all commit to treating ourselves with kindness, embracing our unique beauty, and having a little fun along the way. And if you find yourself feeling weighed down by the scale, check out episode seven of our podcast for more on that.
