what your hot girl summer should look like

Let’s talk hot girl summer. If you’re thinking, ‘Okay Kel, you’re 32 years old. You don’t know what hot girl summer is…’ you’d be absolutely right.

From my love for Tiktok and a quick google search, I got the vibe it was to be the life of the party, sexy, and zero feelings attached. Then I found out it was a song, looked up the lyrics, and here we are. While hot girl summer sounds cool on paper, it seems as though it is yet another unattainable goal for women.

The one thing I loved about it when googling the definition:

being unapologetic.

Now that? I can definitely get behind. But here’s the thing about being unapologetic: it’s about being you. Doing whatever it is you want. Feeling good, without feeling bad about it.

Now, I am no longer one of the cool kids (thank God), but I do believe this whole trend should look a whole lot like self-care without guilt. When I think unapologetic? I think setting boundaries and doing your damn thing. I am happy and confident enough to admit although I love boundaries and I am getting better at them, I am no expert. But Nedra Tawwab sure is. Here is her website and her instagram that is all about the importance of boundaries and incredible step-by-step guides to do so.

Setting boundaries and being unapologetic? That’s a hot girl summer I want to get down with.

Setting boundaries is a true act of self-care. Here are a list of my other favorite types!

  • Resting instead of forcing a workout when your body needs it
  • Going to bed early
  • Long walks without music / podcasts
  • Journaling to self-reflect
  • Reading
  • Meditating
  • Bravo marathons
  • Saying ‘no’

And the list goes on, but those are some of my favorites.

For some reason, self-care sometimes gets a bad rap. It seems selfish; especially when we have grown in this ‘hustle’ culture where the work never stops. Being mentally and emotionally drained for some reason is a badge of honor, and its to be celebrated. Why?

You can be just as successful with rest.

You can be just as successful with quality sleep.

You can be just as successful with leaving the office on time.

You can be just as successful with prioritizing yourself.

You cannot fill from an empty cup.

By taking care of yourself, you are then able to show love and take care of others that need you. That to me, is a real hot girl summer.

Such great points! I am the worst at boundaries….I’ve always looked at as a negative rather than a necessary positive. Glennon Doyle has a great podcast on self care and she compares it to maintaining a car. You don’t just was and wax your car ….you take care of what’s going on under the hood too. Self care is more than manicures and bubble baths!! Many thanks for this blog post! ❤️🙏
